Celebrating Indigenous Ingenuity

Intentionally coinciding with the Summer Solstice, a time of renewal, National Indigenous Peoples Day is a good time to reflect on the many contributions First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples have made, and continue to make, to life in Canada and around the world. This article was written on the unceded territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation.


When most people think about sports in Canada, hockey comes to mind. But Canada actually has two national sports under the National Sports of Canada Act: hockey (winter) and lacrosse (summer). Long before it was officially recognized, lacrosse had already been played by Indigenous peoples for centuries. It is considered North America's oldest team sport and is one of the many Indigenous innovations that have shaped the world around us.


On the subject of sports, for my international friends: hockey is played on ice, with skates. That other game is called field hockey. But beyond the rink, there's another Indigenous contribution going unnoticed: that material used in hockey pucks and other common sports equipment. Long before it was patented, ancient Mesoamerican peoples were processing latex from rubber trees. They then combined it with plant juices to create durable rubber, a material that now shows up everywhere from car tires to household goods.


Indigenous ingenuity didn't stop at play. It also helped shape medicine and everyday health. Across North America, Indigenous peoples used willow bark to relieve pain and reduce fever, thanks to the salicin it contains. This is the same compound that later helped lead to aspirin. Other innovations followed, including early predecessors of hypodermic needles made with hollow bird bones and rubber bladders, and other raw materials used for healing. These are all rooted in Indigenous knowledge and still reflected in the products many of us use every day.


Even dentistry has Indigenous roots. Archeological evidence suggests that Maya used shell dental implants as early as 600 CE, to replace missing teeth. Goldthread (Coptis trifolia) was also used as a mouth rinse for sores and throat irritation long before “mouthwash” became something you'd buy off the shelf.


Indigenous peoples have also shaped the way we move through the world. More than 4,000 years ago, the qajaq, which you may know as the kayak, was developed by Inuit, Aleut, and Yup'ik peoples. Alongside snowshoes, snow goggles, parkas, and toboggans, these innovations were essential for travel, hunting, and survival in northern climates. They were practical, ingenious, and perfectly adapted to the environments in which they were used.


Indigenous innovation also shaped daily life in quieter, but no less meaningful, ways. Long before maple syrup became one of Canada's most recognizable symbols, Indigenous peoples developed and shared methods for tapping maple trees and turning sap into syrup and sugar. So yes: one of the things we identify most as Canadian has Indigenous roots, too.


And Indigenous innovation didn't stop on the land or water. Skipping ahead a few millennia, Mary Golda Ross, a Cherokee mathematician, became the first Native woman engineer at Lockheed. She contributed to major aerospace and spaceflight projects with NASA.2 From Arctic travel to space exploration, Indigenous knowledge and brilliance have long helped expand what is possible.
